Florida A&M exploded for 42 points and used a dominant stretch spanning the second, third, and early fourth quarters to defeat Bethune-Cookman, 42–20, in the 1990 Florida Classic at Tampa Stadium.
Bethune-Cookman opened the game with momentum, converting two first-quarter field goals by Jarvis Daniel—one from 27 yards and another from 38—to take a 6–0 lead after one quarter. But once the Rattlers settled in, the game quickly turned.
Tony Ezell put Florida A&M on the board with a 4-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, giving FAMU a 7–6 lead after Jimmy Vertuno’s PAT. Ezell struck again minutes later, hitting Terry Mickens for a 29-yard touchdown to stretch the margin to 14–6.
From there, it became the Amir Rasul show.
Rasul capped two consecutive drives with touchdown runs of 4 and 9 yards, sending the Rattlers into halftime with a commanding 21–6 advantage and all the momentum.
Early in the third quarter, Rasul added his third touchdown of the day—this time through the air—hauling in an 8-yard pass from Ezell to make it 28 unanswered points and a 35–6 FAMU lead.
Bethune-Cookman finally broke through in the fourth quarter. Craig Hall connected with Andre Howard for a 1-yard touchdown pass, and Kevin Gainer added a late 1-yard touchdown run, along with a successful two-point conversion pass. But FAMU immediately countered, as Stacy LeMay punched in a 5-yard touchdown to seal the 42–20 win.
The Rattlers rode Rasul’s all-around brilliance—125 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on 30 carries, plus 57 receiving yards and a receiving score. Ezell posted an efficient afternoon, throwing for 123 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing score.
Bethune-Cookman’s Craig Hall threw for 273 yards but was hampered by two interceptions and a struggling rushing attack. Jeff Parker led all receivers with 159 yards on eight catches.
Florida A&M’s explosive mid-game run—and Rasul’s dominant performance—proved too much, giving the Rattlers a convincing rivalry win in the 1990 Classic.
