November 30, 1991

Florida A&M unleashed an explosive offensive display—462 total yards and six touchdowns—to roll past Bethune-Cookman, 46–28, in a high-scoring 1991 Florida Classic at Tampa Stadium.

Quarterback Tony Ezell delivered one of the finest performances in the rivalry’s history, throwing for 296 yards and four touchdowns while completing 16 of 27 passes without an interception. The Rattlers struck early and often, piling up 27 first-half points and adding key special teams plays to keep momentum firmly on their side.

Bethune-Cookman opened the scoring with a 23-yard field goal from Paul Thurmond, but FAMU responded quickly. Alonzo Ashwood capped a short drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, and minutes later Ezell hit Fann for a 3-yard score to make it 14–3 after one quarter.

The Wildcats trimmed the deficit with a 37-yard field goal, but Ezell answered with the game’s defining play—a 99-yard bomb to Tyrone Davis, the longest pass play in Florida Classic history, extending the Rattlers’ lead. Though Carl Gibbons responded for B-CC with a 9-yard touchdown reception, Ezell closed the half with a 16-yard scoring pass to James Thurman, giving FAMU a 27–13 advantage at halftime.

The second half continued the fireworks. Willie Ceasar pulled Bethune-Cookman within 27–20 with a 1-yard touchdown run, but Ezell found Davis again—this time from 15 yards out—to rebuild a two-possession lead. Backup quarterback Chuck Duffey then entered and connected with Ezell on a 25-yard trick-play touchdown, pushing FAMU ahead 39–20.

Bethune-Cookman answered with Caesar’s second rushing touchdown of the afternoon and a two-point conversion, trimming the margin to 39–28. But any hopes of a comeback ended moments later when James McDuffey blocked a punt and returned it 24 yards for the game-sealing touchdown.

Ashwood led the Rattlers on the ground with 97 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, while Davis turned his two receptions into 114 yards and two scores. Ezell added one of his own as a receiver.

Craig Hall threw for 262 yards and a touchdown for Bethune-Cookman but was intercepted twice, while Caesar paced the Wildcats with 74 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Florida A&M’s explosive offense and timely special teams plays proved overwhelming, securing one of the most high-powered wins in the storied rivalry.
