Florida A&M rallied from an early 16–7 deficit and used a dominant second-half ground attack to defeat Bethune-Cookman, 27–22, in the 1993 Florida Classic at Tampa Stadium.
Bethune-Cookman controlled the opening stages of the game, striking first with a safety by David Watkins and then extending the lead on a 41-yard interception return by Willie Oglesby. The Wildcats pushed the margin to 16–7 in the second quarter when Kelvin Daniels hauled in a 2-yard touchdown pass from Michael Jackson.
Florida A&M, however, found its rhythm just before halftime when Tracy Weldon connected with Robert Wilson for a 48-yard touchdown, trimming the deficit to nine at the break.
The Rattlers surged ahead in the third quarter behind a pair of power runs. Weldon scored on a 1-yard keeper to cut the margin, and Sha-Meil Simpkins followed with an 8-yard touchdown run to give FAMU its first lead of the game at 20–16.
Simpkins added another 1-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter, extending the Rattlers’ lead to 27–16.
Bethune-Cookman made one final push when Jackson found John Jones for a 38-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats’ two-point attempt failed, and FAMU’s defense closed out the game.
Weldon finished with 178 passing yards and a touchdown while also adding a rushing score. Earl Reeves led the Rattlers on the ground with 74 yards on 17 carries, and Terry Mickens paced the receivers with 53 yards.
For Bethune-Cookman, Jackson threw for 208 yards and two touchdowns, while Daniels contributed 86 rushing yards and a receiving score. Jones led all Wildcat receivers with 78 yards and a touchdown.
Florida A&M’s second-half surge and three straight touchdown drives proved decisive, giving the Rattlers another win in the long-running rivalry.
