Bethune-Cookman used a blocked field goal return, a strong rushing performance from Wilmer White, and a late fourth-quarter touchdown to edge Florida A&M, 27–24, in a tight 1994 Florida Classic at Tampa Stadium.
The teams traded early scores in an evenly played first half. B-CC struck first on a 10-yard run by White, but FAMU quickly answered when Sha-Meil Simpkins broke loose for a 28-yard touchdown run. The Wildcats regained the lead on a 1-yard run from Tony Kerrin, though the extra point was missed. Florida A&M responded with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Ernest Cooper to Robert Wilson to take a 14–13 lead.
Just before halftime, Bethune-Cookman seized momentum with one of the game’s defining plays. FAMU lined up for a field goal attempt, but Willie Oglesby broke through, blocked the kick, and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown, giving the Wildcats a 20–14 advantage at the break.
The third quarter passed without scoring, but FAMU fought back early in the fourth. Kwame Vidal powered in from 1 yard out, and Tim Camron added a 39-yard field goal minutes later, giving the Rattlers a 24–20 lead.
Bethune-Cookman mounted the game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter. Kerrin capped the march with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Nobles, putting the Wildcats ahead 27–24. The defense held on the final FAMU possession to secure the win.
White led B-CC with a workhorse performance, rushing for 142 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. Kerrin threw for 182 yards and a touchdown while adding a short rushing score. John Jones anchored the receiving corps with 62 yards.
FAMU relied heavily on its ground game, piling up 221 rushing yards. Simpkins finished with 102 yards and a touchdown, while Vidal added another score. Cooper threw for 97 yards with a touchdown to Wilson, who led the Rattlers with 38 receiving yards.
Bethune-Cookman’s timely special teams play and late-game execution proved decisive in a closely fought rivalry matchup.
