Florida A&M erupted for 50 unanswered points after an early deficit and dominated through the air to rout Bethune-Cookman, 50–14, in the 1998 Florida Classic at the Florida Citrus Bowl.
Bethune-Cookman struck first when Pa’Tell Troutman broke free for a 17-yard touchdown run, but the lead didn’t last long. Juan Toro opened the scoring for FAMU with a 22-yard field goal, and moments later Cedric Byrd scooped up a Wildcats fumble and returned it for a touchdown to put the Rattlers ahead 10–7. Pat Bonner then connected with Tariq Qaiyim for a 24-yard touchdown to extend the lead before Troutman answered with a 2-yard run to tie the game at 14.
From there, the Rattlers took complete control.
Bonner led a late first-half surge, hitting Cedric Mitchell for a 6-yard touchdown and setting up two more Toro field goals from 46 and 40 yards to give FAMU a 30–14 halftime lead.
The Rattlers kept pressing in the second half. Jacquay Nunnally hauled in back-to-back touchdown receptions—a 6-yard strike followed by a 13-yard score—as FAMU continued to stretch the margin. Cainon Lamb capped the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter.
Bonner finished with a commanding performance, completing 27 of 56 passes for 326 yards and five touchdowns without an interception. Nunnally led all receivers with 114 yards and two scores, and Qaiyim added 24 yards and a touchdown.
Bethune-Cookman relied heavily on its run game, piling up 246 rushing yards, including 86 yards from Jay Rogers and two touchdowns from Troutman. But the Wildcats completed just four passes and threw two interceptions, limiting their ability to keep pace with FAMU’s potent offense.
Florida A&M’s relentless passing attack and opportunistic defense ensured a decisive win, marking another emphatic performance in Orlando.
