Florida A&M rode the arm of Albert Chester and a relentless passing attack to a 35–21 victory over Bethune-Cookman in the 2006 Walt Disney World Florida Classic presented by State Farm at the Florida Citrus Bowl.
Chester delivered one of the most efficient quarterback performances in rivalry history, throwing for 339 yards and five touchdowns without an interception to earn FAMU MVP honors. The Rattlers controlled the tempo from start to finish, outgaining the Wildcats 446–242 and racking up 28 first downs.
FAMU opened the scoring in the first quarter when Chester connected with Derek Williams for a 15-yard touchdown, though the extra point was missed. Bethune-Cookman answered early in the second when Jimmie Russell found Jonathan Summers for a 3-yard touchdown to give B-CU its only lead of the game. The Rattlers regained the momentum with a 27-yard field goal from Wesley Taylor, then stretched the lead to 16–7 at halftime on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Chester to Willie Hayward.
The Wildcats tied the game briefly in the third quarter when quarterback Jarod Rucker — B-CU’s MVP — powered in a 5-yard touchdown run. But from there, Chester and the Rattlers took full command.
FAMU responded immediately with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Chester to Roosevelt Kiser, followed minutes later by a 44-yard strike to Ronald Wright for a 29–14 advantage. Rucker kept B-CU alive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Eric Weems early in the fourth quarter, but the Rattlers slammed the door when Chester hit Hayward again — this time from 29 yards — to push the lead to its final margin.
Hayward had a standout performance with 121 receiving yards and two touchdowns on seven catches, while Kiser and Wright added key scores of their own. Running back Anthony Edwards paced the FAMU ground game with 58 yards.
Rucker did all he could for Bethune-Cookman, throwing for 98 yards and a touchdown while adding 45 rushing yards and another score. Summers led the Wildcats with 61 receiving yards on six catches.
Florida A&M’s precision passing, offensive balance, and strong defensive effort secured a convincing Classic victory and continued the Rattlers’ momentum in the mid-2000s rivalry battles.
