November 22, 2008

Florida A&M powered its way to a 58–35 victory over Bethune-Cookman in the 2008 Florida Classic presented by State Farm, riding an explosive ground attack and a career performance from quarterback Curtis Pulley to close the season with a statement win at the Florida Citrus Bowl.

Pulley, named the game’s MVP, was nearly unstoppable as both a runner and passer. He accounted for five total touchdowns — rushing for 107 yards and three scores while throwing for 125 yards and two more — as the Rattlers racked up 330 rushing yards and 455 total yards.

FAMU raced to a 10–0 lead behind a 37-yard field goal from Trevor Scott and a 3-yard touchdown run from Philip Sylvester. Pulley extended the lead early in the second quarter with a 21-yard touchdown run, and Sylvester added another short scoring run to make it 24–0. Moments later, Pulley broke loose again, this time for a 51-yard sprint, pushing the lead to 31–0 before Bethune-Cookman finally answered.

The Wildcats responded with a surge late in the second quarter. McKinson Souverain scored back-to-back touchdowns on short runs to cut the deficit, but LeRoy Vann immediately seized momentum back for the Rattlers with an 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Androse Bell added a late score for B-CU, but FAMU carried a commanding 38–21 lead into halftime.

Bethune-Cookman briefly narrowed the gap in the third quarter behind Souverain’s third rushing touchdown — a 27-yard run — but FAMU continued to score consistently. Pulley found Javares Knight for a 9-yard touchdown, and Scott added field goals of 32 and 26 yards to extend the Rattlers’ advantage.

In the fourth quarter, Pulley capped his stellar performance with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Issac West. B-CU added a late 40-yard touchdown pass from Souverain to Phillip Kirkland, but it wasn’t enough to threaten the Rattlers’ comfortable lead.

Souverain led the Wildcats with 210 yards of total offense and four total touchdowns, but B-CU struggled to slow FAMU’s multi-dimensional offensive attack.

Florida A&M’s physical rushing game, explosive scoring plays, and Pulley’s MVP showcase secured a decisive rivalry win and produced one of the most entertaining, high-scoring Classics of the late 2000s.
