Florida A&M stormed back from a 27–14 halftime deficit with 24 unanswered points in the second half to defeat Bethune-Cookman, 38–27, in a dramatic 2010 Florida Classic at the Florida Citrus Bowl. Behind a masterful performance from MVP running back Philip Sylvester, who rushed for 146 yards and three touchdowns, the Rattlers dominated the final two quarters to secure the comeback win.
FAMU opened the game strong, marching down the field for a 9-yard touchdown run from Sylvester. After a missed extra point on Bethune-Cookman’s answering score, the Rattlers extended the lead to 14–6 when Austin Trainor found Antonio Lawrence for a 10-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter.
Bethune-Cookman took over the second quarter with three straight touchdown drives. Androse Bell scored from 1 yard out, Isidore Jackson powered in a 2-yard run, and Matt Johnson connected with Eddie Poole for a 35-yard touchdown. Johnson then hit Poole again for a two-point conversion, giving the Wildcats a 27–14 halftime lead.
From that point forward, it was all Florida A&M.
Trevor Scott kick-started the rally with a 30-yard field goal early in the third quarter. Minutes later, Sylvester broke loose for a 14-yard touchdown run to bring the Rattlers within three. FAMU took the lead for good when Lavante Page slammed in from the 1-yard line, putting the Rattlers ahead 31–27 entering the fourth quarter.
Florida A&M sealed the game with a grinding, clock-chewing drive capped by Sylvester’s third touchdown of the afternoon— a 3-yard run that pushed the lead to 11. The Rattlers’ defense did the rest, shutting out the Wildcats for the entire second half.
Trainor threw for 261 yards and a touchdown, while Lawrence led FAMU’s receivers with 76 yards. The Rattlers rushed for 199 yards as a team, consistently wearing down the B-CU defense.
Bethune-Cookman produced 432 yards of total offense, highlighted by Jevaughn Reams’ 140 receiving yards and Jackie Wilson’s 73 rushing yards. But missed extra points, stalled drives, and the second-half surge from FAMU ultimately proved too much to overcome.
Florida A&M’s resilience, dominance on the ground, and stifling second-half defense powered the Rattlers to a memorable comeback victory in another Classic chapter filled with momentum swings and standout performances.
