Florida A&M used a dominant third quarter and a pair of defensive touchdowns to pull away from Bethune-Cookman, 46–21, in the 2021 Florida Blue Florida Classic at Camping World Stadium.
Bethune-Cookman struck first when Devin Black connected with Darryl Powell for an 82-yard touchdown. The Rattlers responded quickly, as Xavier Smith hauled in a 48-yard touchdown from Rasean McKay, and Jaylen McCloud followed with a 2-yard scoring run to give FAMU a 13–7 lead after the first quarter.
Points were scarce in the second quarter, but FAMU began to take control early in the third with a 9-yard touchdown run from Terrell Jennings and a 21-yard field goal from Jose Romo-Martinez. Moments later, cornerback BJ Bohler delivered a game-changing play, scooping a fumble and racing 56 yards for a touchdown to stretch the Rattler lead.
FAMU kept its momentum rolling as Bishop Bonnett broke free for a 38-yard scoring run, and Gentle Hunt added another defensive touchdown with a 46-yard fumble return. The Wildcats added two late touchdowns on Kemari Averett receptions, but the deficit was too large to overcome.
Bohler earned MVP honors with a standout defensive performance that included a forced fumble, fumble recovery, interception and a touchdown. Bonnett led a strong FAMU rushing attack with 128 yards, while Smith paced the receiving corps with 82 yards.
FAMU’s dominant second-half surge secured the victory and the program’s first Florida Classic win since 2010.
